Roll Stock Film
Rollstock film packaging uses flexible packaging material supplied in continuous rolls for automatic forming, filling and sealing. The film is unwound by the packaging machine, formed around the product or forming tube, filled and heat-sealed into the required package.
Rollstock film can be customized by material structure, thickness, film width, print repeat, roll diameter, core size, unwind direction and heat-seal layer. These specifications must be matched to the product, package dimensions and packaging equipment.
What Is Roll Stock Film ?
Rollstock film is laminated flexible packaging material supplied in roll form for automated packaging, flow-wrapping, pouch-making and high-speed filling equipment. Compared with preformed pouches, rollstock film is designed for continuous production and can be customized to match product dimensions, line speed, sealing method and barrier requirements.
Rollstock film is widely used for food, snacks, seasonings, wet wipes, personal care products, hardware components, electronic accessories and disposable tableware. Laminate structures such as PET/PE, BOPP/CPP, PET/VMPET/PE and PET/AL/PE can provide moisture protection, oxygen barrier performance, light protection, aroma retention, puncture resistance and reliable heat sealing.

During automatic packaging, the machine pulls the film from the roll and guides it through forming components. The product is then placed or filled into the formed package before longitudinal and cross seals are created. A registration sensor reads printed eye marks to control package length and cutting position. Film stiffness, surface friction, winding tension and heat-seal behavior can affect tracking, forming and sealing performance.
Roll Stock Film vs Pre-Made Pouches
Rollstock film is supplied as continuous film rolls, while pre-made pouches are supplied as finished empty bags.
During packaging, rollstock film is formed, filled and sealed directly by the packaging machine. Pre-made pouches are opened, filled and then sealed using manual, semi-automatic or automatic pouch-filling equipment.
Rollstock film is generally suitable for continuous, higher-volume automatic packaging. Pre-made pouches provide greater flexibility for selected lower-volume projects, multiple product varieties and applications requiring more complex pouch structures.
Rollstock film requires compatible form-fill-seal or flow-wrap equipment. Pre-made pouches can be used with manual filling methods or compatible pre-made pouch filling machines.
Important rollstock specifications include film width, print repeat length, core size, maximum roll diameter, unwind direction and registration-mark position. Important pre-made pouch specifications include pouch width, height, gusset dimensions, filling opening and closure type.
